Today, November 23, 2012, marks two important anniversaries in the history of human rights.  On this day in 2009, fifty-eight people were murdered in the town of Ampatuan on the island of Mindanao in the Philippines.  Thirty-four of those individuals were journalists in what is believed to be the deadliest single attack on the press.  Last year, IFEX, a global network of organizations committed to defending and promoting the right to freedom of expression, launched the International Day to End Impunity.  The goal of the Day is to achieve justice for those persecuted for exercising their right to freedom of expression by drawing global attention to the issue of impunity. The Day not only raises public awareness about what creates and sustains a culture of impunity, it also prompts concerned citizens world-wide to take action, make their voices heard and demand justice.

The team members of the Cartoonists Rights Network International are honored to have helped organize the International Day to End Impunity.  We are especially honored to have nominated Venezuelan cartoonist Rayma Suprani and Indian cartoonist Aseem Trivedi for the International Day to End Impunity’s 23 Actions in 23 Days Calendar.  Each day of this month, up to and including today, features an individual who has been threatened, attacked or worse for expressing themselves.  In all of the cases, the perpetrators have gone free.  We urge you to play your part in ending impunity by first reading their stories and then voicing your support for free speech via email, Facebook and/or Twitter.  Click on November 13 of the 23 Actions In 23 Days Calendar, to learn more about Aseem, CRNI’s 2012 co-recipient of the Award for Courage in Editorial Cartooning.  Click on November 19 of the Calendar, to learn more about Rayma.

CRNI also had the great honor of judging the final round of the International Day to End Impunity Cartoon Contest.  After the dedicated staff at IFEX narrowed the 469 submissions from fifty-five countries to the top forty, and after the public via Facebook narrowed the top forty down to the top ten, CRNI Executive Director Robert “Bro” Russell, Board Member Nik Kowsar and Deputy Director Drew Rougier-Chapman picked the first, second and third place winners of the International Day to End Impunity Cartoon Contest.  Click on IDEI Cartoon Contest to the see the official IFEX award announcement and the winning cartoons.
